Diabloceratops Information:

Diabloceratops eatoni, commonly known as Diabloceratops, is a species of ceratopsid dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 79 to 77 million years ago. Here's some key information about Diabloceratops eatoni: Discovery and Name: Diabloceratops was first described in 2010 by paleontologists James Kirkland, Donald DeBlieux, and Scott Madsen. The name "Diabloceratops" is derived from "Diablo," referring to the Diablo Plateau, the region where the fossils were discovered, and "ceratops," meaning horned face in Greek. Physical Characteristics: Diabloceratops was a relatively small ceratopsid dinosaur compared to other members of its family, measuring around 15 feet (4.6 meters) in length. It had a large bony frill at the back of its head and a pair of long brow horns above its eyes. The frill and horns likely played a role in communication and defense against predators. Horned Dinosaur: Diabloceratops belonged to the group of herbivorous dinosaurs known as ceratopsids, which are characterized by their distinctive horned faces and frills. The frill of Diabloceratops was ornamented with several fenestrae (openings), which may have helped reduce the weight of the skull. Habitat and Location: Fossils of Diabloceratops have been discovered in the Wahweap Formation in southern Utah, USA. During the Late Cretaceous, this region was likely a coastal floodplain with lush vegetation and an abundance of plant life. Paleoenvironment: Diabloceratops lived alongside other dinosaurs such as the duck-billed hadrosaurs, tyrannosaurs, ankylosaurs, and other ceratopsids like Utahceratops and Kosmoceratops. The paleoenvironment was teeming with diverse life forms, and the region had a relatively warm climate during this time. Dietary Habits: Being a ceratopsid, Diabloceratops was a herbivore, meaning it primarily fed on plants. Its beak-like mouth would have been well-suited for cropping vegetation such as ferns, cycads, and other low-lying plants that were abundant in its environment. Taxonomic Classification: Diabloceratops belongs to the family Ceratopsidae within the group Marginocephalia. Within Ceratopsidae, it is classified under the subfamily Chasmosaurinae. As with many dinosaur species, our understanding of Diabloceratops may continue to evolve as new research and discoveries emerge. However, the information mentioned above represents the current knowledge about this fascinating horned dinosaur.
