Brontosaurus was a massive, long-necked plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, around 150 million years ago. It belonged to a group of dinosaurs called sauropods, known for their enormous size, long necks, long tails, and small heads. Brontosaurus could grow to about 70–75 feet long and likely weighed over 15 tons. Its long neck helped it reach vegetation high in trees or sweep across large areas of low-growing plants without moving its heavy body very far.
For many years, scientists debated whether Brontosaurus was actually a separate dinosaur or just another species of Apatosaurus. In 2015, research supported restoring Brontosaurus as its own distinct genus. Like other sauropods, it walked on four sturdy, pillar-like legs and probably traveled in herds for protection. Despite its massive size, it was a peaceful herbivore, using its peg-shaped teeth to strip leaves rather than chew them.
