Phorusrhacos was a large flightless predatory bird that lived in South America during the Miocene Epoch approximately 20 to 15 million years ago. It belonged to a group of birds commonly known as terror birds, which became some of the dominant land predators in South America long after the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.
Standing over 8 feet tall, Phorusrhacos relied on powerful legs, excellent speed, and a massive hooked beak to capture prey. Although it could not fly, its athletic build made it a highly effective hunter. As one of the best-known terror birds, Phorusrhacos provides a fascinating example of how birds evolved to occupy large predator roles after the Age of Dinosaurs.
