The Diana Monkey is an Old World monkey found primarily in the dense rainforests of West Africa. It derives its name from the crescent-shaped white browband on its forehead, reminiscent of the bow of the Roman goddess Diana. This species is notable for its vibrant and contrasting coloration. The Diana Monkey has a black face with a prominent white beard, a greyish-white chest and throat, and a black body with white thighs and rump. This striking appearance makes it one of the most visually appealing primates in its habitat.
Diana Monkeys are arboreal, spending most of their lives in the upper canopy of the rainforest. Their long limbs and prehensile tails are perfectly adapted for an arboreal lifestyle, allowing them to leap between branches and navigate the forest with agility and precision. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day, foraging for fruits, leaves, and insects, which constitute the bulk of their diet. Their sharp vision and dexterous hands enable them to find and manipulate food with ease.
The monkey has distinctive alarm calls for different kinds of predators, and recent research has shown that other forest residents such as the Yellow-casqued Hornbill are able to discriminate these and take appropriate action.
