Springboks (Antidorcas marsupialis) are medium-sized antelopes found predominantly in southern Africa. They are renowned for their remarkable jumping ability, which is both a form of play and a mechanism to evade predators. This jumping behavior, known as pronking, involves the Springbok leaping into the air with an arched back and stiff legs. Pronking can reach heights of up to 10 feet, and distances of up to 50 feet.
The Springbok's physical adaptations are well-suited to its arid and semi-arid habitats. They have a unique skin flap along their back that can lift to reveal a crest of white hair, which is used in displays of alarm and to signal other Springboks. This feature, along with their sharp eyesight and acute sense of smell, helps them detect and escape from predators such as lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs.
