Stegouros was a small armored dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period approximately 74 million years ago in what is now Chile. It belonged to a unique southern group of armored dinosaurs related to ankylosaurs. The dinosaur gained worldwide attention because of its unusual tail weapon, which consisted of several fused bony plates forming a flat, blade-like structure unlike anything previously seen in dinosaurs.
Paleontologists compared the tail weapon to a macuahuitl, an ancient weapon used by Aztec warriors, due to its shape and likely defensive function. Stegouros measured roughly 6 feet in length and probably used its armor and specialized tail to defend itself from predators. Its discovery provided important new insights into dinosaur evolution in the ancient southern continents of Gondwana.
