American Mastodon Information:
The American mastodon (Mammut americanum) was a large, elephant-like mammal that lived across North and Central America during the Pleistocene epoch, becoming extinct around 10,000 years ago. Although similar in appearance to mammoths, mastodons were distinct, with straighter tusks, a heavier build, and different teeth adapted for browsing rather than grazing.
Mastodons primarily lived in forests and wetlands, feeding on leaves, twigs, and aquatic plants. They belonged to a separate evolutionary lineage from mammoths and modern elephants, having diverged millions of years earlier. Evidence suggests that early humans hunted mastodons, contributing to their extinction alongside climate changes at the end of the Ice Age.
This species was one of the most advanced members of the mammutid family. It was also the first fossil vertebrate to be reconstructed and mounted for display in North America.
