The Morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae), known as the Ruru in Maori culture, is a small nocturnal owl native to New Zealand and nearby islands. It receives its English name from its distinctive "more-pork" call, which is commonly heard echoing through forests after dark. Moreporks are skilled nighttime hunters that feed primarily on insects, spiders, small birds, and other small vertebrates.
With excellent night vision and highly sensitive hearing, Moreporks can locate prey in near-total darkness. Their mottled brown plumage provides effective camouflage during the day, allowing them to blend into tree trunks and branches.
