Though commonly called the Tasmanian Tiger because of its striped back, the thylacine was actually a carnivorous marsupial. Native to Tasmania, mainland Australia, and New Guinea, it became extinct in the 20th century, with the last known individual dying in captivity in 1936. Today, the Tasmanian Tiger is remembered as an important symbol of wildlife conservation and extinction awareness.
