Megalodon otodus Information:

"Megalodon" or "Otodus megalodon." Megalodon is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago, during the Cenozoic Era. It is considered one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever existed.

Here are some key points about Megalodon:

  1. Size: Megalodon is estimated to have reached lengths of up to 82 feet (25 meters) or more, making it significantly larger than most contemporary shark species.

  2. Diet: It is believed to have been a formidable apex predator, preying on large marine mammals like whales and other large fish.

  3. Fossil Evidence: Our knowledge of Megalodon comes primarily from fossilized teeth and a few vertebrae since the cartilage that makes up most of a shark's skeleton doesn't fossilize as easily as bones.

  4. Extinction: The cause of Megalodon's extinction is not precisely known, but it is generally thought to have occurred around 2.6 million years ago. Climate changes, competition for food, and the availability of suitable prey may have played roles in its decline.

As for "Otodus," this is a genus of extinct mackerel sharks to which Megalodon is often taxonomically classified as "Otodus megalodon."

Super-cool model of a scary dinosaur. I especially liked the base of water--it was a nice touch.
