The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the largest living lizard, found naturally on several Indonesian islands, including Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. Adults can exceed 10 feet in length and weigh more than 150 pounds, making them the apex terrestrial predators within their limited range.
Komodo dragons possess thick skin reinforced with tiny bony plates called osteoderms that provide added protection. Their powerful jaws, serrated teeth, sharp claws, and highly developed sense of smell allow them to locate prey over long distances using their forked tongues. Although capable hunters, they also readily scavenge carrion and play an important ecological role within their island ecosystems.
