Coelacanths (Latimeria) first appeared more than 400 million years ago during the Devonian Period and were once believed to have become extinct alongside the dinosaurs. That assumption changed dramatically in 1938 when a living coelacanth was discovered off the coast of South Africa. A second living species was identified near Indonesia in 1997, making the coelacanth one of the best-known examples of a "living fossil."
These deep-sea fish inhabit underwater caves and rocky slopes at depths of approximately 500 to 2,000 feet. Their distinctive fleshy, lobed fins resemble the limb structure of early four-limbed vertebrates, making them especially important for studying vertebrate evolution. Coelacanths are slow-growing, long-lived fish that give birth to live young after embryos develop inside the mother.
