Cryptoclidus was a marine reptile that lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic Period about 165 million years ago. Although often mistaken for a dinosaur, it actually belonged to a group of long-necked marine reptiles called plesiosaurs. Cryptoclidus used its four powerful flippers to swim through shallow seas in search of fish, squid, and other small marine animals. Fossils have been discovered mainly in England and other parts of Europe.
This reptile had a relatively small head attached to a long flexible neck that allowed it to quickly catch prey underwater. Scientists believe Cryptoclidus was a capable swimmer but probably relied more on agility than speed. Its body shape was well adapted for maneuvering through ancient coastal waters. Today, Cryptoclidus remains one of the better-known plesiosaurs because of the many well-preserved fossils found in Jurassic marine deposits.
