The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is one of the most widespread mammals in North America. Fawns are born in late spring or early summer after a gestation period of about seven months. A doe usually gives birth to one or two fawns, although triplets occasionally occur in healthy populations.
Newborn fawns weigh between 4 and 8 pounds and are covered with distinctive white spots that provide excellent camouflage among grasses and woodland vegetation. During their first weeks of life, they remain motionless while hidden in vegetation as their mother forages nearby, returning several times each day to nurse them. As they grow stronger, the fawns begin following their mother and gradually lose their spotted coat during their first autumn.
