Velociraptor mongoliensis lived during the Late Cretaceous Period about 75 to 71 million years ago in what is now Mongolia. Although made famous by movies as a large predator, real Velociraptors were much smaller, measuring approximately 6 to 7 feet in length and weighing around 30 pounds.
Their most recognizable feature was the enlarged sickle-shaped claw on each hind foot, which was likely used to grasp and restrain prey. Fossil discoveries have shown that Velociraptor possessed feathers, making it one of the clearest examples of the evolutionary relationship between non-avian dinosaurs and modern birds. Its lightweight body, long legs, and keen senses made it a fast, agile predator well suited for hunting smaller animals.
