Elephant seals are the largest members of the pinniped family, which includes seals, sea lions, and walruses. Two species exist today: the northern elephant seal, found along the Pacific coast of North America, and the southern elephant seal, which inhabits sub-Antarctic islands and the coasts of South America, South Africa, and New Zealand.
Their name comes from the enlarged trunk-like nose of adult males, which is used to produce loud calls during the breeding season. Mature males can reach lengths of up to 20 feet and weigh as much as 8,800 pounds, while females are considerably smaller. Elephant seals spend much of their lives at sea but return to land to breed, give birth, and molt.
