Tyrannosaurus Information:

Tyrannosaurus rex, often abbreviated as T. rex, was one of the largest land carnivores of all time, living during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 68 to 66 million years ago. Here are some key points about T. rex:

  1. Physical Characteristics: T. rex was characterized by its massive size, powerful jaws, and small arms relative to its body. It had a large head with robust teeth, some of which could reach lengths of up to 12 inches (30 cm). Its hind limbs were long and powerful, enabling it to run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour (40 km/h).

  2. Size: Fully grown T. rex individuals could reach lengths of up to 40 feet (12 meters) and stand about 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to 6 meters) tall at the hips. Estimates of their weight vary, but they likely ranged between 7 and 9 tons.

  3. Diet: T. rex was a apex predator, meaning it was at the top of the food chain in its ecosystem. Its diet likely consisted of large herbivorous dinosaurs such as hadrosaurs and ceratopsians, though it may have also scavenged or hunted smaller prey.

  4. Discovery and Fossil Record: The first fossils of T. rex were discovered in Montana, USA, in 1902 by paleontologist Barnum Brown. Since then, numerous specimens have been found across western North America. The most famous and complete specimen is known as "Sue," discovered in South Dakota in 1990.

  5. Behavior: While much of T. rex's behavior is speculative, scientists believe it was likely a solitary hunter, although it may have occasionally scavenged or engaged in cooperative hunting behaviors. It likely had keen senses of smell and vision, enabling it to locate prey over long distances.

  6. Extinction: Like all non-avian dinosaurs, T. rex went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, around 66 million years ago, likely due to a combination of factors such as climate change and the impact of a large asteroid or comet.
