The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is native to North America and is one of the continent's largest game birds. Adult males, known as toms or gobblers, are considerably larger than females and are famous for their elaborate courtship displays, during which they fan their tails, puff out their feathers, lower their wings, and gobble to attract hens and establish dominance over rival males.
Wild Turkeys inhabit forests, woodlands, and open fields, where they feed on acorns, seeds, berries, insects, and other small invertebrates. Although they spend much of their time walking on the ground, they are capable of powerful bursts of flight and roost in trees at night. Thanks to successful conservation efforts, Wild Turkey populations have recovered across much of their historic range and remain one of North America's greatest wildlife restoration success stories.
