Dunkleosteus was one of the largest and most formidable fish of the Late Devonian Period, living approximately 358 to 382 million years ago. Some species could grow to lengths of more than 30 feet and weigh several tons, making them apex predators of ancient seas. Its most distinctive feature was its heavily armored head, composed of thick bony plates that protected it from attacks and provided support for its powerful jaws.
Unlike modern fish, Dunkleosteus did not possess true teeth. Instead, it had sharpened bony jaw plates that continuously honed themselves through use. These structures allowed it to slice through prey and crush armored marine animals with tremendous force. Paleontologists estimate that Dunkleosteus possessed one of the strongest bite forces ever recorded among fish.
