Medieval knights spent years mastering swordsmanship, spear fighting, and other combat skills before entering battle. One of the most recognizable training devices was the quintain, a rotating target mounted on a pivot. After striking the target, the knight had to continue moving quickly to avoid being hit by the counterweight or swinging arm that rotated around the post.
Training devices such as the quintain helped develop timing, accuracy, balance, and weapon control while allowing repeated practice without risking injury to another person. Similar training equipment was used throughout Europe for both mounted knights and foot soldiers, helping prepare them for tournaments and warfare.
