Blackbeard was the nickname of Edward Teach (or Thatch), an English pirate who operated during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century. He commanded the famous ship Queen Anne's Revenge and sailed throughout the Caribbean and along the Atlantic coast of North America between 1716 and 1718.
Blackbeard carefully cultivated a terrifying image to intimidate his enemies. Contemporary accounts describe him tying slow-burning fuses beneath his hat during battle, surrounding his face with smoke to create a fearsome appearance. Although his reputation for violence was legendary, historians believe he often relied more on intimidation than actual bloodshed to convince merchant ships to surrender without a fight. Blackbeard was killed in battle with British naval forces off the coast of North Carolina in November 1718.
