Flying squirrels are small nocturnal rodents found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Rather than flying like bats or birds, they glide by stretching a membrane of skin called the patagium between their front and hind legs, allowing them to travel impressive distances from tree to tree.
Flying squirrels feed primarily on nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, and tree buds, although some species also eat insects and bird eggs. Their large eyes provide excellent night vision, while their flattened tails help them steer and maintain stability during long glides.
