Gorgosaurus, meaning "dreadful lizard," lived in western North America during the Late Cretaceous Period approximately 76.6 to 75.1 million years ago. Adults reached about 26 to 30 feet in length and weighed around 2.5 tons, making them close relatives of Albertosaurus.
Like other tyrannosaurids, Gorgosaurus had a large but lightweight skull with powerful jaws and sharp teeth adapted for hunting. Distinctive features included a blunt snout, circular eye sockets, and prominent crests above the eyes that helped distinguish it from closely related species.
