Smilodon lived from approximately 2.5 million to about 10,000 years ago throughout North and South America. Often called the "saber-toothed cat," it was a powerful predator that hunted large mammals using canine teeth that could reach nearly 11 inches in length.
Despite its common nickname, the "saber-toothed tiger," Smilodon was not closely related to modern tigers. Instead, it belonged to a separate branch of the cat family and relied on its massive forelimbs and specialized teeth to capture prey.
