Parasaurolophus, whose name means "near crested lizard," lived during the Late Cretaceous Period and belonged to the duck-billed dinosaur family known as hadrosaurs. It is best known for its long, hollow cranial crest, which may have been used for communication, display, and producing resonant sounds.
This large herbivore traveled on either two or four legs while feeding on a variety of plants. Its distinctive crest remains one of the most recognizable features of any dinosaur and continues to be the subject of scientific research.
