The Papo Elephant Seal features a powerful pose with its head held high and mouth open, as though producing one of the deep roars associated with adult males. The prominent proboscis, visible teeth, sculpted tongue, and heavy body shape help convey the impressive size and strength of this marine mammal.
The deep gray coloration is applied consistently across the figure and highlights the broad contours of the body. The underside is relatively flat and has less texturing than the upper surfaces, but the dramatic posture and expressive face make the figure a strong addition to a sea life collection.
Elephant seals are large marine mammals found along Pacific coastlines. Adult males can reach lengths of about 16 feet and weigh around 6,000 pounds. Their enlarged, trunk-like nose, known as a proboscis, helps amplify loud vocalizations used during breeding season.
During the breeding season, males gather in colonies and compete for access to females through roaring, posturing, and physical battles. A dominant male, often called a beachmaster, may control a large group of females while subordinate males continue competing for breeding opportunities.
Elephant seals are also exceptional divers. They can descend to depths of approximately 5,000 feet and remain underwater for more than an hour while searching for fish, squid, and other marine prey.
