Diplodocus carnegii was a massive herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period about 154 to 152 million years ago in what is now western North America. It belonged to a group called sauropods, known for their extremely long necks and tails. Diplodocus could grow over 80 feet long, yet its body remained relatively lightweight compared to some other giant dinosaurs because of its long, narrow frame.
One of the most distinctive features of Diplodocus was its whip-like tail, which may have been used for defense, communication, or display. Its peg-shaped teeth were designed for stripping leaves from plants rather than chewing. Fossils of Diplodocus have been discovered mainly in the Morrison Formation, one of the richest dinosaur fossil regions in the world. Diplodocus remains one of the most famous and recognizable dinosaurs ever discovered.
