Hyaenodon gigas was one of the largest members of an extinct group of carnivorous mammals known as hyaenodonts. These apex predators lived from the Eocene through the Miocene epochs, dominating terrestrial ecosystems for more than 25 million years.
Despite its name, Hyaenodon was not closely related to modern hyenas. Its body shape and hunting behavior are thought to have been more similar to those of modern wolves, relying on powerful jaws and keen senses to capture prey.
