Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years.
The Safari Ltd. Macrauchenia captures the appearance of one of South America's most unusual prehistoric mammals. With its long neck, slender legs, and distinctive trunk-like snout, this figure recreates a creature unlike anything alive today.
The Safari Ltd. Macrauchenia measures approximately: 5" L x 1.4" W x 3.5" H.
This Safari Ltd. Macrauchenia features a well-balanced sculpt that highlights the animal's unusual anatomy. The elongated neck and graceful legs give the figure an elegant appearance, while the distinctive snout immediately draws attention. The facial sculpt is especially noteworthy and provides a glimpse into what made this prehistoric mammal so unique.
The paint application features natural tan and brown tones with a lighter underside and darker accents on the legs, snout, and tail. These subtle color variations add visual interest without overwhelming the figure's sculptural details. The result is an attractive and scientifically inspired representation of one of South America's most fascinating extinct mammals.
Macrauchenia was a genus of hoofed mammal that lived in South America from approximately 7 million years ago until the end of the Pleistocene Epoch about 10,000 years ago. Its name means "long llama," a reference to its long neck and overall body shape. However, it was not closely related to llamas and instead belonged to a unique group of South American mammals that evolved in isolation for millions of years.
One of the most distinctive features of Macrauchenia was the position of its nasal opening, which was located high on the skull. This unusual anatomy suggests the presence of a short trunk or highly flexible snout, somewhat similar to a modern tapir. Combined with its long legs and neck, this gave Macrauchenia a very distinctive appearance unlike any living mammal.
Macrauchenia inhabited grasslands and open woodlands where it fed on a variety of plants. It was among the last members of its lineage and survived until relatively recent times before disappearing during the wave of extinctions that affected many large mammals at the end of the Ice Age.
