Schleich Dinosaur Figure - Mosasaurus #15026
3 + Years
Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years.
The Schleich Mosasaurus measures: 12.75" L x 4.25" W x 3.4" T.
One of the standout features of this model is its fully functional jaw, which opens and closes, allowing for interactive play and display. The attention to detail extends to the mouth, where an upper/inner double row of teeth and a forked tongue are accurately portrayed.
The shape of the Schleich Mosasaurus exudes a lifelike swimming pose, capturing the essence of this ancient marine reptile. While the back row of ridges adds a touch of visual interest, it's important to note that there is no fossil evidence to support this specific accuracy.
In 1808, naturalist Georges Cuvier concluded it belonged to a giant marine lizard with similarities to monitor lizards but otherwise unlike any known living animal. This concept was revolutionary at the time and helped support the then-developing ideas of extinction. However, Cuvier did not designate a scientific name for the new animal; this was done by William Daniel Conybeare in 1822 when he named it Mosasaurus in reference to its origin in fossil deposits near the Meuse River.
The exact affinities of Mosasaurus as a squamate remain controversial, and scientists continue to debate whether its closest living relatives are monitor lizards or snakes.
