Brontosaurus, whose name means "thunder lizard," lived during the Late Jurassic Period approximately 156 to 146 million years ago. It was a massive plant-eating sauropod with a long neck, small head, pillar-like legs, and a long whip-like tail used for balance.
For many years Brontosaurus was considered a species of Apatosaurus, but a 2015 scientific study proposed that it should once again be recognized as its own genus. The largest individuals are estimated to have reached about 72 feet (22 meters) in length and weighed as much as 15 tons.
