Megalodon, scientifically known as Otodus megalodon, was one of the largest sharks to ever live. It inhabited Earth's oceans from approximately 23 million to 3.6 million years ago during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Scientists estimate that Megalodon may have reached lengths of up to 60 feet and possessed one of the strongest bite forces of any known animal. Fossil evidence suggests it preyed on whales, dolphins, and other large marine animals.
Most of what scientists know about Megalodon comes from fossilized teeth and vertebrae discovered around the world. Some Megalodon teeth measure more than 7 inches long, making them among the largest shark teeth ever found. The extinction of Megalodon may have been caused by changing ocean temperatures, declining prey populations, and competition from other predators.
