Smilodon was a prehistoric predator best known as the “saber-toothed tiger,” though it was not actually a tiger. It lived during the Ice Age, from about 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago, and belonged to a group of extinct cats called machairodonts. Smilodon’s most striking feature was its pair of long, curved canine teeth, which could grow up to 7 inches long. It had a powerful, muscular body with strong forelegs, built more for grappling and ambushing prey than for long-distance running.
Smilodon lived in North and South America and hunted large herbivores such as bison, camels, and young mammoths. Fossil discoveries, especially from the La Brea Tar Pits in California, suggest that Smilodon may have lived or hunted in social groups, somewhat like modern lions. It went extinct near the end of the last Ice Age, likely due to a combination of climate change and the decline of large prey animals, possibly along with human competition.
