Alpacas are domesticated camelids native to the Andes Mountains of South America, particularly Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. They were bred from the wild vicuña over 6,000 years ago for their fleece. Unlike llamas, alpacas are smaller and are raised primarily for fiber rather than as pack animals. There are two breeds: Huacaya, which has dense, crimped fleece with a fluffy appearance, and Suri, which produces long, silky locks. Alpaca fiber is valued for being soft, lightweight, and warmer than sheep’s wool, while containing little to no lanolin.
Alpacas are herd animals and thrive in social groups. They communicate through body posture and a range of soft humming sounds. When stressed or establishing dominance, they may spit, usually at other alpacas. They are efficient grazers and have padded feet that minimize damage to pastureland. Their gentle temperament and manageable size have contributed to their growing popularity on farms outside South America.
