The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a deep-sea fish found off the coasts of Australia and New Zealand, typically dwelling at depths of 600 to 1,200 meters. At these crushing depths, its gelatinous body structure helps it withstand the pressure while conserving energy. Out of water, the blobfish’s body loses its shape, giving it the famously “melty” appearance that made it an internet sensation. However, in its natural habitat, it looks quite different—better adapted and far less cartoonish. The blobfish plays a role in the deep-sea ecosystem as a bottom-dwelling predator, feeding on crustaceans and other small invertebrates.
