The Blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a deep-sea fish found in the waters off Australia and New Zealand. It typically lives at depths between 600 and 1,200 meters, where the immense water pressure is dozens of times greater than at the ocean's surface. Its soft, gelatinous body helps it survive in this extreme environment while conserving energy.
The blobfish became famous because specimens brought to the surface lose the support of the surrounding water pressure, causing them to appear saggy and distorted. In their natural habitat, however, blobfish have a much more typical fish-like appearance. They feed primarily on small crustaceans and other organisms found on or near the seafloor.
