Megacerops was a large herbivorous mammal that lived during the Late Eocene Epoch approximately 34 to 38 million years ago in North America. It belonged to a group known as brontotheres, distant relatives of modern horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. Despite its rhinoceros-like appearance, Megacerops was not closely related to modern rhinos.
The name Megacerops means "large-horned face," referring to the distinctive pair of bony horns located on its snout. Adult individuals could reach lengths of more than 16 feet and weigh several tons. Scientists believe these horns were used in display behaviors and combat between rivals. Like modern browsing mammals, Megacerops likely used its flexible lips and tongue to select leaves, shoots, and other vegetation from its environment.
