This CollectA Ichthyovenator is an excellent representation of one of the more unusual spinosaurid dinosaurs discovered in recent decades. The figure accurately highlights the animal's elongated snout, powerful body, and distinctive sail structure. The sail is particularly well executed, showcasing the jagged profile created by the elongated neural spines and the characteristic dip that separates the sail into two sections.
The detailed sculpting throughout the head, body, and sail gives the figure a realistic appearance while emphasizing the features that make Ichthyovenator unique among predatory dinosaurs. Collectors of spinosaurids and lesser-known theropods will appreciate the attention to anatomical detail and the figure's strong display presence.
Ichthyovenator, whose name means "fish hunter," lived approximately 125 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Period in what is now Laos. It belonged to the spinosaurid family, a group of carnivorous dinosaurs known for their crocodile-like skulls, conical teeth, and adaptations for feeding on fish and other aquatic prey.
What makes Ichthyovenator especially noteworthy is its unusual sail structure. Unlike the continuous sail seen in Spinosaurus, Ichthyovenator's elongated neural spines formed two separate sail sections with a noticeable dip between them. Paleontologists continue to debate the purpose of this structure, suggesting possible roles in display, species recognition, thermoregulation, or swimming. Like its relatives, Ichthyovenator likely spent much of its time near rivers and lakes, using its specialized jaws to capture fish and other prey.
