There are three species of right whales:
North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis): This species is found in the North Atlantic Ocean, primarily in the waters along the eastern coast of North America. They are critically endangered, with an estimated population of around 400 individuals.
North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica): This species inhabits the North Pacific Ocean, particularly in the eastern and western parts. They are also critically endangered, and their population is estimated to be less than 30 individuals.
Southern right whale (Eubalaena australis): Found in the Southern Hemisphere, these whales inhabit the waters of the southern Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The population of southern right whales is larger than that of the other two species, with estimates ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 individuals.
Right whales are known for their large size, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet (15 meters) and weighing up to 70 tons. They have stocky bodies, a broad back without a dorsal fin, and long, curved baleen plates in their mouths, which they use to filter feed on small marine organisms, such as zooplankton.
Despite receiving protection from commercial whaling since the mid-20th century, right whales continue to face numerous threats. These include entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes, habitat degradation, and the effects of climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and recover right whale populations, including measures to reduce human impacts and promote their habitat preservation.
