White Lions in Real Life

White lions are not a separate subspecies but are African lions with a rare genetic condition called leucism, which causes a lack of pigmentation in their fur. This condition results in their distinctive white or light blonde coats. Unlike albino animals, white lions have normal pigmentation in their eyes and skin, which can vary from light to dark. The white coat of these lions is caused by a recessive gene, which both parents must carry to produce white cubs.

White lions are extremely rare in the wild due to the low probability of both parents carrying the recessive gene and because their light coloration can be a disadvantage in terms of camouflage. As a result, white lions are more commonly found in captivity, where breeding programs have been established to maintain their unique genetic lineage.

    Just love this lion pose -- so NOBLE. This is not a scary depiction of this animal. (Which is fitting, because this predator spends most of his time just relaxing between meals maybe his lioness 'wife' caught, afterall!) But this pose is especially calm and easy to appreciate again and again -- especially when paired with the two matching white lion cubs--which are also well-sculpted! Thank you for carrying these figurines! We are enjoying them immensely.
