The Borealopelta in Real Life
Borealopelta was an armored dinosaur that lived approximately 110 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Period in what is now Canada. It belonged to a group of heavily protected herbivores known as nodosaurids, close relatives of the better-known ankylosaurs. Its body was covered with bony plates and spikes that provided protection against large predatory dinosaurs.
Borealopelta became famous after the discovery of an extraordinarily well-preserved fossil that retained not only its armor but also impressions of skin and other soft tissues. Scientists estimate that the animal measured about 18 feet in length and weighed approximately 2,800 pounds. Equipped with a sharp beak for cropping vegetation, Borealopelta spent its life feeding on low-growing plants while relying on its impressive armor for defense.
