Darwin’s Frog is a small amphibian named after the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, who encountered the species during the voyage of the HMS Beagle. The species became well known for its unusual appearance and remarkable parental behavior known as “mouth brooding,” where the developing young are protected inside the parent’s mouth during part of their growth.
Darwin’s Frogs evolved excellent camouflage, often resembling dried leaves on the forest floor to avoid predators. Sadly, the Northern Darwin’s Frog has not been seen since 1981 and is believed to be extinct. Habitat loss, disease, and environmental changes have contributed to the decline of these remarkable amphibians.
