Mosasaurus in Real Life
Mosasaurus was a genus of large marine reptiles that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 82 to 66 million years ago. Mosasaurs were not dinosaurs but belonged to a group of aquatic reptiles adapted for life in the oceans. Some species of Mosasaurus reached enormous sizes, with the largest estimates approaching 49 feet in length.
Mosasaurus had powerful jaws lined with sharp teeth and preyed on fish, cephalopods, marine reptiles, and other animals sharing the Late Cretaceous seas. Fossils have been discovered in North America, Europe, and other regions once covered by ancient oceans. The first scientifically recognized remains were discovered near Maastricht in the Netherlands, and the genus later took its name from the nearby Meuse River.
