Columbian Mammoth Information:
The Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was one of the largest mammoth species, reaching up to 13 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing as much as 10 tons. It lived across North America during the Pleistocene epoch, favoring grasslands and open woodlands.
Unlike the woolly mammoth, which adapted to colder climates, the Columbian mammoth lived in warmer regions and had a lighter coat of hair. These herbivores fed on grasses, shrubs, and trees, using their long tusks to gather food and strip vegetation. They lived alongside early humans, who likely hunted them, contributing to their extinction around 10,000 years ago.
This species was endemic to North America. Recent DNA research suggests the Columbian mammoth resulted from hybridization between the steppe mammoth and the woolly mammoth.
