The tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) is a rare reptile native to New Zealand and is often called a “living fossil” due to its ancient lineage dating back over 200 million years.
Unlike true lizards, tuataras belong to their own unique reptile order. They are slow-growing, long-lived animals that can live over 100 years and possess a light-sensitive “third eye” that helps regulate biological rhythms.
