Tianzhenosaurus is a genus of dinosaur that belongs to the group of theropod dinosaurs known as therizinosauroids. Therizinosauroids were a peculiar group of theropods characterized by their long necks, large bodies, and distinctive, clawed hands. Tianzhenosaurus specifically lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 125 million years ago. Fossils of Tianzhenosaurus have been found in China, in the Shanxi Province, in the Yixian Formation. It was named after the county of Tianzhen in Shanxi.
One of the most notable features of Tianzhenosaurus and other therizinosauroids is their enormous, scythe-like claws on their hands, which could reach lengths of up to 3 feet. These claws were likely used for herbivorous purposes, possibly for stripping leaves and branches from trees, even though they were theropods, a group traditionally associated with carnivorous habits.
