Woolly mammoths were large, shaggy-haired relatives of today’s elephants that lived during the Ice Age, most commonly during the Pleistocene epoch. They were well adapted to cold climates, with thick fur, a layer of insulating fat, and long, curved tusks that could grow up to 15 feet long. Adult mammoths stood about 9 to 11 feet tall at the shoulder and could weigh up to 6 tons.
