Velociraptor mongoliensis lived approximately 75 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Mongolia. Although popular culture often portrays it as much larger, the real Velociraptor measured about 6 to 7 feet long and weighed roughly 30 pounds, making it a relatively small but highly capable predator.
Its most recognizable feature was the enlarged sickle-shaped claw on each hind foot, which was likely used to grasp and restrain prey.
