Velociraptor (Velociraptor mongoliensis) lived approximately 75 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Mongolia. Although made famous by movies, the real animal was much smaller than commonly portrayed, measuring about 6 to 7 feet long and weighing roughly 30 pounds.
Its most recognizable feature was the enlarged sickle-shaped claw on each hind foot, which was likely used to grasp and restrain prey. Fossil discoveries have shown that Velociraptor possessed feathers, making it much more closely related in appearance to modern birds than early reptilian reconstructions suggested. Its combination of speed, agility, and intelligence made it one of the most effective small predators of its time.
