Warthogs (Phacochoerus africanus) are wild members of the pig family that inhabit grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. Their large curved tusks are enlarged canine teeth used for defense, digging, and establishing dominance, while the thick facial pads help protect them during fights with rivals.
Although they appear bulky, warthogs are surprisingly agile and can run at speeds of more than 30 miles per hour when escaping predators. They feed mainly on grasses, roots, bulbs, berries, and other vegetation, often kneeling on their front knees while grazing. Warthogs also commonly use abandoned aardvark burrows as shelter, entering backward so their tusks face outward toward potential predators.
